Joana Bourke

A historian and scholar from New Zealand. She teaches History at the University of London’s Birkbeck College. She earned a BA and a master’s degree in history from the University of Auckland. She began her PhD at the Australian National University and subsequently published academic papers in Australia, Cambridge, and London. Bourke, who describes herself as a "socialista feminist," has written about Irish history, the history of gender, working class culture, war and masculinity, cultural history of fear, history of rape, history of what it means to be human, pain, and militarisation. She is the author of Los violadores. Historia del estupro de 1860 a nuestros días (Crítica, 2009) and Sed de sangre (Crítica, 2010), is the director of the Birkbeck Trauma Project (previously, Birbeck Pain Project). In 2014, he was elected as a fellow of the British Academy.
